Each new Jaguar is unmistakable. The sleek, tactful design, the roar of their finely-tuned engines around Denver, the interior elegance–these are only part of the legendary Jaguar story. Many around Boulder want to know who makes Jaguar the foremost luxury automaker in the world. It started long ago in Blackpool, England, but the history of who owns Jaguar is more complex than a name and a location. Discover how Tata Motors came to bring Jaguar into the 21st century with style, and learn more about these classic vehicles below with Jaguar Flatirons.

A Brief History of Tata Motors

Answering, “Who makes Jaguar?” requires a closer look at the exceptional group that acquired it in the 21st century. Tata Motors has been on the cutting edge of technological advancement in India since its origins as a trading company in 1868. Founded by “The father of Indian Industry,” Jamsetji Tata, the Tata Group is known for a number of impressive firsts in the country, namely:

  • The opening of the first hotel with electricity in 1907
  • Western India’s first hydroelectric plant in 1915
  • The 1911 opening of one of India’s highest-ranked universities, the Indian Institute of Science

In 1945, Tata Motors, who owns Jaguar, was founded as an innovator in the burgeoning locomotive industry in India. Later in a joint venture with Daimler-Benz, Tata Motors entered the automotive industry, where it began flourishing as a leader around the world. By 2008, the Tata Group had reached over 95 separate enterprises in almost as many industries, when Tata fatefully acquired Jaguar and Land Rover from Ford.

A Brief History of Jaguar

While the Lakewood driver is ultimately who makes Jaguar thrive, the range of vehicles has led a decorated life since its origins in 1922. See how Jaguar became the internationally iconic company it is today:

  • 1922: Swallow Sidecar Company is founded in Blackpool, England, though they quickly change their focus to motorcars, with a moniker shift to S.S. Cars Limited.
  • 1935: S.S. Cars Limited produces the famous Jaguar SS.
  • 1945: Because of the Jaguar SS success, the company changes its name to Jaguar Cars Limited.
  • 1951 and 1953: Now-classic Jaguar cars like the Jaguar E-TYPE win the revered Le Mans 24-Hour Race.
  • 1965: Jaguar Cars becomes British Motor Holdings Limited, later merging with Leyland Motor Corporation Limited to form British Leyland Motor Corporation.
  • 1984: Jaguar becomes its own company again.
  • 1999 – Ford Motors purchases Jaguar.
  • 2008 – Tata Motors acquires Jaguar from Ford

Where is Jaguar Made?

“Who owns Jaguar?” is a relatively simple question with a complex history. Where Jaguar is made, however, is quite basic. Though Tata Motors is based in India, the three Jaguar manufacturing plants and two design centers continue to reside in the U.K., where they have for nearly a hundred years. Each new Jaguar comes from these highly-specialized plants, where they receive the royal treatment in every detail.
